SPPC Work - an overview
Delivering Our Strategy
In 2024 SPPC reviewed how it had performed in relation to its strategic objectives over the preceding 6 years. As part of that review we surveyed our members and stakeholders. Of respondents to the survey:
- 80% felt that SPPC advocate/argues for the things which they feel are important
- 77% said that SPPC helps them to fell well informed about relevant research, effective practice and innovation, and opportunities for collaboration with others
- 75% said that SPPC is relevant and useful to the challenges they face

Comments from the 2024 survey of members and stakeholders
Outputs delivered by and through the SPPC include:
- A monthly ebulletin providing a digest of relevant policy, practice, research and other news to around 3000 inboxes each month.
- The Scottish Palliative Care Guidelines.
- Establishment and facilitation of the Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief alliance which provides practical resources and promotes advance planning and supportive behaviours around death, dying and loss.
- Initiation of the annual To Absent Friends festival, which tackles isolation linked to bereavement.
- Annual Conferences
- The ground-breaking End of Life Aid Skills for Everyone public education course.
- The Truacanta Project which worked alongside 5 communities to nurture locally-led action on caring, dying and loss.
- The Building on the Best Scotland project which aimed to improve palliative care in hospitals across Scotland. This included establishing the Scottish Network for Acute Palliative Care (SNAPC).
- Annual Demystifing Death Weeks, supporting individuals and organisations to identify and address local issues.
- Responses to numerous Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament policy and legislative consultations of relevance to palliative care.
- A Bereavement-Friendly Workplaces Toolkit and Bereavement Charter Mark schemes for Workplaces and for Primary Schools.
