The association between ethnicity, socioeconomic deprivation and receipt of hospital-based palliative care for people with COVID-19: a dual centre service evaluation

This study by Sabrina Bajwah et al, published in Palliative Medicine, examine associations between ethnicity and deprivation with timing of palliative care referral for inpatients with COVID-19.

The Internet and End of Life

DEMOS has worked with the Art of Dying Well to publish The Internet and End of Life, which explores how online forums act as a repository of collective knowledge and build communities of solidarity.

Consultation: Every Story's Ending

The SPPC is currently seeking views, feedback and comments on Every Story's Ending: Proposals to improve people's experiences of living with serious illness, death, dying and bereavement in Scotland. This draft position paper sets out the major issues affecting care and support of people living with serious illness, dying and bereavement in Scotland and proposes a practical agenda for progress over the next 3-10 years.

The consultation will run until Friday 16th July. Please send your response to: Pauline.Ellison@palliativecarescotland.org.uk cc’ing Mark.Hazelwood@palliativecarescotland.org.uk.

Given the length of the document, we understand that most people may wish to only read/comment on specific sections of the document.

After the success of last year's virtual Poster Parade, this year we are once again running a virtual poster display and competition as part of an Autumn Season of online events to replace our usual Annual Conference.

To Absent Friends: Small Grants Scheme Launched

A small grants fund has been set up to support organisations to put on remembrance events as part of this year's To Absent Friends festival. (1-7 November 2021.) Small grants of up to up to £250 are available. Any organisation with a bank account can apply for a grant. We would encourage applications from charities, community groups, care homes, NHS organisations, small businesses, prisons, arts organisations, schools, education institutions and more. Save the Date - Launch of Every Story's Ending

8 September 2021, 10am - 11.30am

The Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care will host an online event to mark the launch of Every Story's Ending, proposals to improve people's experiences of living with serious illness, death, dying and bereavement in Scotland. We will be joined by Maree Todd MSP, Minister for Public Health, Women's Health and Sport. More details to follow.

Feedback on ReSPECT sought from patients and families

Resuscitation Council UK has launched a survey to capture feedback on people’s experiences using version 3 of the of the Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment (ReSPECT) form.

If you have been involved in ReSPECT conversations about what matters to you and to plan your care and treatment in a future emergency, or have been involved in a ReSPECT conversation as a family member or legal welfare proxy/lasting power of attorney, please complete this anonymous survey.

Expression of Interest - adult end of life care projects

The End of Life Care Integrator is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for adult end of life care projects. They are keen to work with interested parties across the four nations of the UK. EOIs that focus on the following are particularly encouraged:

  • Increasing end of life care services that will actively support system recovery from the pandemic.
  • Addressing health inequalities in terms of access to end of life care and/or outcomes achieved.
  • Partnership working across the health and social care system.

An independent commission has been set up to explore issues and make recommendations on how to better support bereaved people through and beyond Covid-19.

Funeral costs for children under 18

The Paediatric End of Life Care Network (PELiCaN) has published guidance on funeral costs in Scotland for children under the age of 18 years.

In their fourth blog in the 'Deaths at Home' series, the Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research investigate whether the increase in deaths at home has remained despite very few COVID-19 home deaths.
