SPPC News

To Absent Friends

This week sees the launch of the sixth annual To Absent Friends festival. All kinds of events will take place across Scotland, organised by a range of individuals and organisations. Some are personal events amongst friends or communities, some are open to the public. You can view our full listings here to see if anything is taking place near you, with new events being added all the time.

This year's events include old favourites like the Edinburgh Brass Band who have performed their annual To Absent Friends concert every year since we started in 2014. You can see them at St John's Church on Saturday 2 November.

There are also new groups taking part including Dumfries Get Together ladies' social group who are hosting a To Absent Friends tapas evening on Friday 1 November and the Leadhills Family Action Group who are hosting a storytelling workshop on Sunday 3 November.

If you'd like to join in with this year's festival, you can:

  • attend one of the To Absent Friends events already organised - browse the listings.
  • organise your own event.
  • join in over social media by sharing a story or changing your profile picture.

End of Life Aid Skills for Everyone (EASE)

EASE is a new public education course for anyone who wants to know more about dying, death and bereavement. Developed by the SPPC, the course explores the basics of end-of-life care and addresses some of the fears and uncertainties many people have about death, dying and bereavement. We are currently running a pilot version of the course in two locations - Musselburgh and Dundee - and both courses quickly filled up, with long waiting lists. Refinements will be made to the course following feedback from course facilitators and participants, and we hope to make the course more widely available in 2020.

Posters and Presentations from SPPC Annual Conference

Speaker presentations and posters from the SPPC Annual Conference (held in September) can now be accessed on the SPPC website.
