A much-cherished palliative care unit in Dundee celebrated its 40th anniversary at the weekend.

In the same week that the NHS marked its 70th birthday, supporters of Roxburghe House held a garden party in the grounds of the Royal Victoria Hospital on Saturday.

The event was open to the public and gave people a chance to mark an important milestone in the history of palliative care service in NHS Tayside.

The purpose-built unit in the grounds of the hospital offers specialist palliative care to patients with cancer and other illnesses and is staffed by a dedicated multi professional team.

Staff put on a full itinerary of activities on the day, including music, home baking, raffles and children’s entertainment.

Visitors also jumped at the chance to meet two therapy Shetland ponies – Bonnie and Jack. The pair spent the whole afternoon at Roxburghe House.

A display of photographs showed the history of the unit, featuring many former staff and events that have helped shape the service in Dundee over the years.

Fiona Barnett, coordinator for specialist palliative care services, said: “The garden party event is all about celebrating the history of our service and reflecting on all the changes and improvements that have taken place over the years.

“Our staff provide a vital specialist palliative care service to the people of Tayside, providing dedicated support to patients and their families at often very difficult times in their lives. Over the years Roxburghe House has developed strong links with the local and wider communities and I know that it is held in high regard by the public.

“The party offered lots of different activities and stands to appeal to all ages. With the beautiful summer weather we have been enjoying lately, it was bound to be a fun-filled afternoon.”

She said she was grateful to everyone who donated items for the raffle and supported the event in any way.

“I would also like to thank local businesses for their support,” she added. Every offer of help has been much appreciated. We have been overwhelmed with just how generous everyone has been.”
